With her radiant voice and captivating stage presence, soprano Gunta Smirnova has already performed as a soloist on many important stages in Europe, such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Stadtcasino Basel, the Zurich Opera House, the Teatro Olimpico Vicenza and the Teatro del Liceu Barcelona.
The singer is in great demand as a baroque specialist and regularly performs with orchestras such as La Cetra Basel, Basel Chamber Orchestra, B'Rock Orchestra and Gewandhaus Orchestra. Recurring guest appearances in the renowned St. Thomas Church in Leipzig and at many festivals throughout Europe (Innsbruck Days of Early Music, Bremen Music Festival, Settimana Muscale Monreale) are among the highlights of her artistic work.
Gunta Smirnova grew up in Latvia, where music and singing play a central role in the culture and education of the people. Her specialized music studies took the singer to Switzerland (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Zurich University of the Arts). Further master classes and private lessons complement her vocal training.
The fascination with the human voice of all ages is one of the singer's greatest interests. Gunta Smirnova has been teaching the youngest singers at the Basel Boys' Choir with love and passion for many years. She also gives private lessons to enthusiastic choir singers of the older generation with skill and sensitivity.
