Patrick Joray
saxophone and flute
career / background
Patrick Joray (*1999, Solothurn) grew up in a musical home and began playing the ukulele at the age of five and later the guitar. Even as a young boy, however, the saxophone was his dream instrument. At the age of nine, he was given his first saxophone and soon discovered his love and enthusiasm for jazz.
During this time, he founded the formation "Joray Brothers Quartet/ Quintet" together with his brother (Silvan Joray, jazz guitarist), with whom he was initially active in the Solothurn/Bern region and later also in Basel. After graduating from high school, he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Music on tenor saxophone (from 2018-2021) with Domenic Landolf, Mark Turner and William Evans at the Jazzcampus in Basel.
In spring 2021 he won one of the prestigious Friedl-Wald scholarships. From fall 2021 to fall 2023 he will complete his Master's degree in Education at the Jazzcampus in Basel, where Mark Turner, one of the most influential tenor saxophonists of the 21st century, was his mentor and sponsor.
In 2022 he was the winner of the Canton of Solothurn's Cultural Promotion Prize for Music. In December 2022, his debut album "Castelferretti - Live at the Birdseye" was released as leader with the Patrick Joray Quintet. In 2023 he was the winner of a cultural prize from the "Kurt and Barbara Alten Foundation" from Solothurn. He lives in Basel and works as a freelance musician in various formations at home and abroad.
